A prisoner recently escaped in Sweden, just to...
This is an actualy swedish prison cell. Image source
Ostragard is an open prison- meaning there isn't very much security- and until November 29th, 2013 it didn't really need any security. All prisoners are on an electronic monitoring system which allows the staff to track their every movement.
A prisoner at this prison complained to staff, just one month after being enrolled in the system, that he had a toothache. When a few weeks had passed and nothing was done about the situation the prisoner took matters into his own hands. He walked off the premises, found a dentist- had the tooth removed. After the surgery he found police had tracked him down, he willingly got into the police cars, and was driven back to the prison to serve his sentence- no questions asked. Because he had deserted the premises without permission, he will be forced to serve just one extra day (something that would never happen in the American justice system).
Problem solved. I love sweden.
