Did you know That Bethany Hamilton’s Left Arm Was Completely Bitten Off By A Shark While..

Bethany Hamilton, 23, born in Hawaii is a professional surfer who survived a shark attack in 2003. She lost her arm up to the shoulder in the incident as well as 60% of her blood by the time she was brought to the hospital but doctors managed to save her life. It was a real struggle for Hamilton to return to surfing being handicapped but she was determined to do it. Thanks to her strong will and self-belief, she managed to teach herself to surf with one arm using a custom-made board. She entered her first post-attack major competition in 2004 and has won many prizes ever since.

The 15 foot long tiger shark that had bitten Bethany was caught by fishermen soon after the incident. The shark mouth, which had surfboard pieces in it, was measured and it matched Bethany’s destroyed one. The broken bitten surfboard is now displayed at the California Surf Museum.
Bethany has managed to rise from a shark attack victim to an inspirational role model. She has been a guest on many TV shows, received the ESPY award for Best Comeback Athlete and the Courage Teen Choice Award as well as published a book. The feature film ‘Soul Surfer’ based on the book was released in 2011.
