Demi-Lee Brennan from Gerroa, Australia was 9 years old when she contacted a virus that fatally damaged her liver and was given barely a couple of days to live. Luckily, a donated liver was found soon enough to save her life. After a 10-hour-long operation Demi-Lee was transplanted the new liver and was put on a standard regime of immuno-suppressant drugs, which are given to transplant patients so the body doesn’t reject the new organ.

Nine months after the operation Demi-Lee was admitted back to hospital as her condition got worse. To their dismay, doctors realized that her blood type had changed from O-negative to O-positive. Her parents were tested both O-negative so it was confirmed that Demi-Lee’s had definitely been same as theirs before the operation. The cause of the problem were Demi-Lee’s residual cells as the donor’s cells seemed to have survived better and the drugs were fighting them, inflicting aggravation of the patient’s condition. Once the immuno-suppressants were stopped, the girl’s health started to improve.

Doctors have claimed that Demi-Lee’s case is a medical miracle that could only happen once in 6 billion cases. Discoveries made regarding this young girl’s case would lead to tremendous development in the terms of organ transplantation.
