Did you know that Alcatraz only operated for 29 years because it was proven that it wasn't the strongest and most escape-proof American prison as it was once believed? Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin's joint and successful escape in 1962 proved that it wasn't 100% escape-proof. As such, Alcatraz stopped functioning as a prison in 1963 only 29 years after opening its cells for convicts back in 1934.
