Rihanna took pop music and mixed it with her own flow to create an extremely catchy and successful musical career. She came on to the scene around 2005 with the hit single "Pon Da Replay" and has since released dozens of hit singles, with various extremely popular artists including Jay-Z, Eminem, (her ex) Chris Brown, etc.

Her 7th studio album, unapologetic, was released in 2012 and hit number 1 in no time- but there are a lot of other facts you might not know about her- TYDK presents Rihanna

1- Rihanna was born in Barbados, and started singing by the age of 7, and she was a military cadet in high school. Her musical influences as a child were Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. In high school she started a girl band with two other girls, and after school she would sell clothes from a street stall with her father.  

2- Her signature musical style is actually completely by influence of her home country, Barbados. It mixes Reggae, Dancehall, pop and RnB. She was discovered by an American producer who was vacationing in her hometown- and she moved to the USA by age 16.

3- She was called into the offices of Jay-Z at Def Jam (he was president at the time) where she was asked to sing for him- he quickly signed her to the label. When Pom da Replay came out, Jay-Z was quoted as to saying he was afraid the song was too big as he was afraid she would only ever be known for that song.

4- She has 5 American music awards, 18 Billboard music awards, and was ranked in TIME magazine as one of the most influential people in the world.

5- She was supposed to perform at the 51st grammy music awards, but because of a domestic dispute with Chris Brown, her off and on boyfriend, she could not make it.
