Did You Know That 10,000 people paid $2 for a phone app to …
Teenager really have it easy today. If they are suffering from acne all they need to do is download the applications offered by ‘AcneApp’ and ‘Acne Pwner’ which will, supposedly, cure their pimples alternating blue and red light emitted by a smart phone. The advertisement was based on a British study claiming that “blue and red light treatment will reduce blemishes and eliminate bacteria”.
However, the study issued in the British Journal of Dermatology doesn’t actually imply that the light emitted by a smart phone would do the trick in curing any kind of skin disease. There are dermatology treatments which use blue and red light therapy in acne healing but the light in these procedures is at least a thousand times stronger that the one given off by a small device such as phone.
Thousands of teenagers have downloaded the application which costs $1.99 from the iTune store. The Federal Trade Commission has pressed charges against the companies selling the application accusing them of misleading health claims. The two companies didn’t admit their actions were illegal but nevertheless agreed to forfeit their profit from the apps sold.
