In 1995 a military vetaran stole a M-60 tank and went driving it on California 163 highway. The man knocked down several power poles and fire hydrants and flattened more than 40 cars before the police managed to stop him after a half an hour chase. The 53-ton vehicle eventually got stranded on the concrete road divider after the driver failed to cross southbound lanes of the highway. As soon as the massive machine stopped moving police officers jumped on it and opened the hatch using bolt-cutter. They yelled to the driver to surrender but as he tried to start the tank again, police officers were compelled to open fire on him. The man died before reaching the hospital due to a fatal gunshot wound on the neck.
